Biomes of the World

There are large areas on Earth that have similar climates and distinct plant and animal populations. These are called Biomes and each biome has its own producers, consumers and decomposers. There are seven terrestrial biomes we will study:

  • Tropical rainforest
  • Temperate Deciduous Forest
  • Grasslands – Prairies
  • Grasslands - Savanna
  • Taiga (Boreal Forest)
  • Tundra
  • Desert

Your group is responsible for researching one of these biomes assigned by your teacher and presenting your research to the rest of the class. Be Creative! Your presentation could be a:
  • Prezi
  • Glogster
  • Powerpoint
  • Poster

Each group member is going to have a research role. You are primarily responsible for your role within the group. You will research individually on your topic and you will be responsible for one quarter of the final product.

The geographer is responsible for the research and presentation of where the particular biome is found in the world. You will need to include information about the physical landscape: valleys, mountains, plateaus, rivers etc. Explain how humans influence the environment in your biome, for example construction, pollution conservation etc. A map of the world with your biome clearly identified should be included.

Meteorologists are scientists who study the atmosphere to see how it affects the environment and to predict the weather and climate trends. You will need to research information about climate and weather and include details about precipitation, sunshine/daylight totals, humidity, air pressure, temperatures, wind velocity etc. Identify any significant weather patterns or trends month to month or throughout the year in your biome that may impact the environment and organisms in it.

A botanist studies the plant life of a given area. They may also look at abiotic factors such as soil, climate, sunlight etc. to better understand why specific species of plants live in the area. You need to identify at least ten different plant species and list any special adaptations they may have. Illustrations and/or pictures should be included.

A zoologist studies the animal life in an environment. They may use information about both abiotic and biotic factors to help understand how organisms live there. Identify in your project at least three herbivores, three carnivores, and three omnivores with details about any animal adaptations that enable them to live in this biome. At least two food chains should be included , identifying producer, primary consumer and secondary consumer. Identify at least one decomposer and explain it’s role in the biome. Include illustrations and/or pictures .
