The Watsons Go To Birmingham

The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis has many literary devices. This novel takes place in 1963, Flint and Alabama. There are five important characters in this story. They are Byron, a 13 year old trouble maker, Kenny, a 10 year old little brother of Byron and Joey, the youngest sibling while six years old. Byron always gets in trouble for things like throwing Nazi parachutes on fire down the toilet. This problem is resolved when Byron becomes more mature later in the story.

Setting is very important in The Watsons Go to Birmingham because there are many settings that take place in the book. For instance, Flint and Alabama are very important in the book. Alabama is very important because the bombing took place there and Grandma Sands lives there. The bombing is really important because the bombing is one of the main events in the story. Flint is very important because The Watsons had all of their adventures and memories there. We learn about the setting by how the characters act and what they wear. Also, the characters talk about the weather For Example, Byron said there were frozen dead bodies in the garbage truck in Flint. The author describes Flint well and same with Alabama. Joey, By and Kenny are sweating so much in Alabama which links to how the weather is and in Flint they are freezing cold. Setting is really important in this story because if there were no settings the characters would not have feelings or reactions and the story would be dull. For Example, Kenny would not have been about to drown in the story if there was no water which is part of the setting. The settings influence the characters attitude because Byron would not make up funny stories like the Frozen Dead Bodies story or the Wool Pooh story. By what stories Byron makes up about the settings we understand what he acts like for example, he would say “Shake it off! It’s not that cold!” in Flint or something like that.

Characters are a big part of The Watsons Go to Birmingham too. The author makes the characters act in a certain way for his readers to understand what the characters personalities are about and what the characters are about. The author describes the characters by their looks, how they act and their emotions. For Example, Byron changes his hair and later in the story Kenny becomes more Teen-ager like Byron a little. For Instance, Kenny went to the swimming place that had signs that said "Do Not Enter!" And stuff like that. Byron uses slang to tell people if they are wimpy or if he is trying to be cool. The Watsons Go to Birmingham has many different characters and a lot of them. Byron is a dynamic character. He changes from Bad-Boy to Good-Boy. He does not do many bad things anymore. For instance, Byron went to the Public swimming area with Joey instead of the one that was really dangerous. Byron used to be a bully to little kids For example, Kenny and other kids saw Byron as one of the "Gods" of the story because he practically was the head of the school. Joey is really flat. She does not change or impact anyone. She is the same old Joey from the start of the story to the end. Rufus is foil. He is not one of the main characters in the story and he does not change a bit or impact anyone. Larry is also Foil. He got beat up by Byron when he was being mean to Kenny. We never hear what happens to Larry. He does not change at all or impact anyone either.
