The comma is put before the conjunction in a sentence. When there are two independent clauses in a sentence, you always put the comma before the conjunction.
Examples:
Cameron walked around the room, and he opened the door.
The circus was in town, and Mark was going to see it.
The man shoplifted, so he went to jail.
Ben got on the bus, so he could go to school.
His choice was to do his homework, or he could clean his room.
